GENERAL ANESTHETIC
What is general anesthesia and sedation?
General anesthesia (GA) is when you are totally unconscious or “asleep”. In this state, you can't feel any pain, even without local anesthesia. Most dental procedures can be completed while under GA.
Sedation is a state of reduced consciousness, where you are largely unaware of your surroundings. This can be accomplished by using intravenous techniques or by taking oral medication prior to your appointment. As you are not totally unconscious while under sedation, local anesthetic is often given to ensure your comfort during procedures.
Why do you use general anesthesia for dental work?
Many patients have phobias about dental treatment. Others require more difficult or lengthy procedures to be completed. For both of these patients, general anesthetic provides a medically safe option for having your dental treatment completed while you are “asleep” in one simple appointment. General anesthetics can also be done for the removal of wisdom teeth as well as on children who require dental treatment and may have difficulty sitting in the dental chair. Mentally or physically challenged individuals can also benefit from having dental treatment done under GA.
Where is the general anesthetic work done?
All general anesthetic and sedation procedures are done in conjunction with a fully accredited anesthetic clinic within our building. This clinic has state of the art equipment and experienced anesthetists who provide the same level of excellent care that you will come to know from Dr. Wittenberg. Please contact our office for further information on general anesthetic or sedation procedures. |
